Growing Up in War Time France: "I was a kid of the street. I carried ration tickets from one side of town to another. It was war in my country. I joined the French Underground when I was 14. I started carrying a pistol and got bigger and bigger guns until I was carrying a machine gun. We blew up bridges, cut phone lines, tried to destroy the communication system of the Germans. I grew up fast. I was afraid many times. I got drunk with the men. When your country is occupied you have to fight. You know that life is very very important and friendship is very very important." |
