living in Africa: "I studied classical music in school. After the war I formed a jazz band. I was playing sax, clarinet, drums, electric guitar and singing. The band got a contract in Africa. There was a large French community on the Ivory Coast. We played for five years during the winter months. I spent all of my time playing music and making art. Music was my bread, painting was my butter." |
